Knives that tilt in the vice
Some knives will tilt to one side due to the shape of the spine of the knife no matter how tightly you clamp in the knife.
Here are several solutions:
1) place a quarter inch of double sided mounting tape* on the inside of the vice
- do not remove the back tape, this side will face the knife
- the vice can be completely unscrewed. This makes placing the tape easy
- place the knife through the vice and then work the knife up into place
- the tape can be easily removed for knives that don't need it
- some knives work best with the tape only on one side
2) ** New ** - place sheet cork on the inside of the vice (both sides)
- cork will last much longer than foam tape - the vice can be completely unscrewed. This makes placing the tape easy.
- place the knife through the vice and then work the knife up into place.
3) another option is to lay the knife on a diamond stone (or grinding wheel) and grind a flat spot on the side of the spine.
- You do not have to grind both the spine and the edge, just the spine.
- The flat spot allows the knife to better fit the vice.
4) the Tormek Small Knife Holder
- clamp this holder in the vice
- place the knife in the holder and tighten to hold the knife in place
*Mounting tape is available drug stores and office supply stores
